BRIN Designs Real-Time Railway Bridge Audit Technology System to Reduce High Train Accident Rates

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing real-time monitoring research to audit the condition of rail tracks on bridges to prevent and reduce train accidents in Indonesia.

BRIN Head Arif Satria made this statement in response to the Argo Bromo Anggrek train accident that collided with an electric commuter train (KRL) in East Bekasi, resulting in a fatality.

"In the railway context, we are not only talking about facilities, but also infrastructure. One of the technologies being developed is the Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS), which is used to audit railway bridges in real time. This system is very useful, especially for PT KAI in maintaining the safety and reliability of infrastructure," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Arif explained that various studies have been conducted, including research on modeling the performance and population of high-speed trains, as well as the development of prototype automation and signaling systems. From these studies, several technologies are being continuously explored by BRIN researchers.

Overall, Arif added that BRIN's railway research continues to develop, with around 20 studies underway, and all the necessary facilities and testing equipment are now available.

"Going forward, various recent incidents can become the topic of further research, considering that train accidents are generally multifaceted, encompassing technological, behavioral, and social factors. Because trains are an ecosystem, the problem cannot be viewed from just one perspective," he said.

The BRIN Head also stated that the diverse railway ecosystem provides valuable study material for researchers. Furthermore, BRIN is revitalizing its collaboration with PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) in Madiun, East Java, to strengthen collaboration in the sector.

"BRIN is not only focused on technological research, but also encompasses legal, social, and policy aspects, to provide comprehensive solutions to various national challenges," said Arif Satria.
